Paleontologists examine fossils, which are the preserved remains or traces of organisms from the past, to understand the evolution of life on Earth, the history of biodiversity, and past environmental conditions. These fossils can include bones, teeth, shells, footprints, and even fossilized plant matter.
The field of paleontology is broad and encompasses various subdisciplines. Paleozoology focuses on fossil animals, while
