palaneen

Palaneen is a fictional genus of flowering plants described in speculative botany and used here to illustrate a highland cloud-forest flora. The genus comprises a single species, Palaneen luminans, and the name is derived from a Nyaran term meaning light, in reference to its pale blossoms.

Palaneen luminans is a small- to medium-sized tree, typically 8 to 12 meters tall. Leaves are elliptic, 6–14 cm long, with a glaucous underside. The inflorescence is a loose panicle bearing pale lilac to white flowers; the fruit is a dry capsule about 12–15 mm long.

Distribution is restricted to cloud-forest habitats on the Nyaran highlands at elevations of 1200–2100 meters. It prefers volcanic or rich loamy soils and occurs in mixed stands with several epiphytic and understory species.
