Pakaroiden is the genitive plural form of the Finnish word pakara, meaning the buttock. In English, the buttocks, or gluteal region, refer to the two rounded pads of soft tissue located on the posterior aspect of the pelvis. They are part of the posterior trunk and play a key role in movement and posture.

Anatomy: The buttocks consist of skin, subcutaneous fat, and the gluteal muscles—the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. These muscles sit over the pelvic bones and are innervated mainly by the superior and inferior gluteal nerves. Blood supply comes from the superior and inferior gluteal arteries, with venous drainage accompanying these vessels. The region also contains nearby connective tissue, fat pads, and fascia that contribute to contour and function.

Function: The gluteal muscles contribute to hip extension, abduction, and external rotation, and they help stabilize the pelvis during walking and running. The gluteus maximus is especially important for powerful movements such as rising from a chair, climbing, and sprinting, while the medius and minimus are crucial for maintaining balance and a level pelvis during gait.

Clinical notes: The buttocks are a common site for intramuscular injections, with ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal approaches used to minimize nerve injury. Conditions affecting the region include muscle strains, contusions, and soft-tissue infections. Nerve compression or injury in the area can cause buttock pain or referred symptoms, sometimes related to nearby sciatic or gluteal nerve dysfunction.
