Painolevyyn is a Finnish term that translates to "printing plate" in English. It refers to a flat surface onto which an image or text is applied for the purpose of transferring it to another material, typically paper, through a printing process. The concept of a printing plate is fundamental to various forms of printing, including lithography, intaglio, and letterpress.

Historically, printing plates were made from materials like wood, metal (such as copper or zinc), or stone. The image or text was either carved into the surface, etched onto it, or applied in a way that would accept ink. In modern printing, plates are often made of thin metal sheets, commonly aluminum or polyester, coated with a light-sensitive emulsion.
