Paberkandjat is a traditional cultural practice of reciprocal exchange and communal artistry observed by communities in the Paberkandjat region, a coastal area in a tropical archipelago. The term combines elements of the local language, with paber meaning gathering and kandjat signaling exchange or sharing.

The practice centers on seasonal gatherings that incorporate food sharing, music, dance, and the exchange of crafts such as textiles, basketry, and carved objects. Participants contribute according to kinship and role, and in return receive goods and services needed for the season. A defining feature is the sharing circle, where elders pass knowledge to younger participants via ceremonial songs and demonstrations.

Social life coordinating paberkandjat is organized through extended kin networks and customary councils that schedule events and resolve disputes. The ceremonies preserve a specialized repertoire of terms and songs used only during the gatherings.

Historically, paberkandjat developed along inland–coastal trade networks and absorbed influences from neighboring cultures. In recent decades it has faced pressures from urbanization and market economies, but cultural organizations and communities work to document rituals and sustain traditional crafts.
