pHÄnderungen refers to alterations in the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH scale, ranging from 0 to 14, quantifies the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in a substance. A pH of 7 is neutral, while values below 7 indicate acidity and values above 7 indicate alkalinity (or basicity).

These changes can occur due to various chemical reactions or external influences. For instance, adding an acid, such as hydrochloric acid, to a neutral solution will increase the concentration of H+ ions and thus lower the pH, making it more acidic. Conversely, adding a base, like sodium hydroxide, will decrease the H+ ion concentration and raise the pH, making it more alkaline.

Biological systems are particularly sensitive to pH changes. Enzymes, the biological catalysts essential for many life processes, function optimally within a narrow pH range. Significant deviations can denature these proteins, rendering them inactive and disrupting metabolic functions. For example, blood pH is tightly regulated around 7.4; deviations outside a small range can be life-threatening.

Environmental factors also play a role. Acid rain, caused by atmospheric pollution, lowers the pH of lakes and soils, harming aquatic life and plant growth. In industrial processes, controlling pH is crucial for product quality, reaction efficiency, and waste treatment. Various buffering systems exist in nature and industry to resist drastic pH changes and maintain stability.
