Päättelytyyppi refers to the logical process or method used to arrive at a conclusion. In reasoning, distinct types of inference are commonly recognized. Deductive reasoning starts with a general principle or premise and applies it to a specific case to reach a certain conclusion. If the premises are true and the logic is valid, the conclusion must be true. An example is: All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

Inductive reasoning, on the other hand, moves from specific observations to a broader generalization. While inductive reasoning can lead to probable conclusions, it does not guarantee certainty. For instance, observing that every swan you have ever seen is white might lead to the conclusion that all swans are white. However, this is a generalization that can be disproven by a single observation of a black swan.

Abductive reasoning is another type, often described as inference to the best explanation. It begins with an incomplete set of observations and seeks to find the most plausible explanation for them. If a patient presents with a fever and cough, a doctor might abductively conclude that the patient has the flu, as this is the most likely cause given the symptoms.

These different päättelytyypit are fundamental to how humans understand the world, solve problems, and construct arguments. The choice of päättelytyyppi often depends on the nature of the problem and the desired level of certainty.
