There are several categories of access control: physical (door access), logical (network or application access), and hybrid systems that combine both. Physical systems often use radio-frequency identification (RFID) and near-field communication (NFC), while logical systems may employ username/password pairs, multi-factor authentication, or token-based protocols such as OAuth or FIDO2.

Benefits of access control include improved security posture, traceability of movements, compliance with regulations, and the ability to dynamically alter access rights in response to changes in personnel or risk. Challenges involve ensuring interoperability among heterogeneous devices, maintaining user privacy, managing large data sets of credential information, and preventing single points of failure.

Advances in cloud-based identity services, artificial intelligence for anomaly detection, and zero-trust security models continue to shape the evolution of access control systems in both enterprise and public sector deployments.
