Overgangsbanden, a Dutch term translating to "transition bands" in English, refers to specialized musical ensembles focused on bridging the stylistic gap between a music school's educational environment and the professional music world. These bands are most commonly associated with wind bands, fanfares, or similar large ensembles.

The primary purpose of an overgangsband is to provide a crucial intermediate step for musicians, typically young adults or advanced students, who have mastered the fundamentals in a beginner or student band but are not yet ready for the demanding repertoire and performance standards of a top-level amateur or professional hoofdband (main band). Participation allows musicians to further develop their technical skills, sight-reading abilities, and ensemble playing in a supportive, yet more challenging, setting before making the final leap.

Repertoire for an overgangsband is deliberately chosen to be more complex than that of a jeugdband (youth band) but generally less difficult than the works performed by the main ensemble. This graduated approach helps build confidence and musical maturity. These bands play a significant role within the structure of many Dutch musical societies, helping to ensure a continuous pipeline of skilled players for the future, thereby sustaining the vibrant tradition of community-based wind music in the Netherlands and Flanders.
