Overførselsmekanismer refers to the processes by which characteristics, knowledge, or behaviors acquired in one context are applied or manifested in another. Essentially, it describes the transfer of learning from a source situation to a target situation.

There are various types of transfer. Near transfer occurs when the source and target contexts are highly similar, making the application of learned material straightforward. For instance, learning to ride a bicycle might facilitate learning to ride a motorcycle. Far transfer, conversely, happens when the contexts are dissimilar, requiring a deeper understanding of underlying principles and abstract concepts to enable successful application. An example would be applying problem-solving strategies learned in mathematics to a business decision.

Positive transfer occurs when prior learning aids performance in a new situation. Negative transfer happens when prior learning hinders performance in a new situation, often due to interference from old habits or incorrect assumptions. Zero transfer means there is no discernible effect of prior learning on new performance.
