An overdraingsbryter, often translated as a changeover switch or transfer switch, is an electrical switch used to select between two different power sources for a single load. This is commonly seen in situations where a primary power source, such as the utility grid, needs to be backed up by a secondary source, like a generator. The overdraingsbryter manually or automatically redirects power to the connected equipment, ensuring continuous operation during a primary power outage.

There are two main types: manual and automatic. A manual overdraingsbryter requires a human operator to physically flip the switch to select the desired power source. This is a simpler and often less expensive option. An automatic overdraingsbryter, also known as an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), uses sensors to detect a loss of primary power and automatically switches to the backup source. Once primary power is restored, it can also automatically switch back. These are more complex and costly but provide a higher level of convenience and uninterrupted power.

The primary function of an overdraingsbryter is to prevent the load from being connected to both power sources simultaneously, which could cause damage or create a dangerous electrical situation. They are essential components in backup power systems for homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure to maintain essential services.
