In psychology, overcompensation is sometimes linked to Alfred Adler's theory of the inferiority complex. Adler suggested that individuals who feel inferior in one area may strive to excel in another to compensate for this perceived inadequacy. For example, someone who feels socially awkward might try to become overly dominant or boastful to mask their insecurity. This excessive behavior, while intended to address a weakness, can inadvertently draw more attention to it or create new problems.

In everyday language, overcompensating refers to going to extremes to correct a perceived mistake or to demonstrate a quality that one feels they lack. This might involve a person who apologizes profusely for a minor error, or someone who works excessively long hours to prove their dedication after a period of underperformance.
