Overanthropomorphizing is the excessive ascription of human traits, motives, or emotions to non-human entities beyond what is warranted by evidence or context. While anthropomorphism is a common and often practical way to interpret animals, objects, and systems, overanthropomorphizing pushes those attributions beyond plausible or scientifically justified levels. The term is used in psychology, media studies, and science communication to describe patterns of mind attribution that are not supported by data or observable behavior.

Contexts in which it appears include everyday language (speaking to pets as if they understand us), consumer technology (describing AI as self aware or capable of genuine intention), fiction (sentient robots with complex emotions), and scientific discourse (projecting human mental states onto nonhuman agents). It also occurs when people infer moral agency or consciousness from complex but nonhuman processes, such as weather patterns or plant responses.

Causes and mechanisms include principles from social cognition and agency detection, whereby people infer intentionality to explain actions under uncertainty. Factors such as narrative convenience, media representations, and design choices in human computer interaction can amplify these tendencies. Cultural norms and personal experiences with particular technologies or animals can further bias interpretation toward humanlike explanations.

Implications and critique center on potential misunderstandings: overattribution can obscure nonhuman realities such as animal sensory capacities, ecological relationships, or algorithmic behavior. It may also lead to misplaced trust or disappointment. Proponents of careful language advocate precise descriptions that reflect evidence, reserving humanlike terms for clearly demonstrated similarities while avoiding anthropomorphizing when unwarranted.
