An out-of-vocabulary (OOV) word, often abbreviated as OOV word, refers to a word encountered by a natural language processing (NLP) model that was not present in its training vocabulary. During the training phase, NLP models learn representations of words based on the text data they are exposed to. The vocabulary is essentially a list of all unique words the model has seen during this process. When the model encounters a word during inference or testing that is not on this list, it is considered an OOV word.

OOV words pose a significant challenge in NLP tasks such as machine translation, text classification, and sentiment analysis. When a model encounters an OOV word, it often cannot process it correctly, leading to a degradation in performance. Standard techniques for handling OOV words include replacing them with a generic "unknown" token, ignoring them, or attempting to infer their meaning based on context or sub-word information. More advanced methods involve using character-level embeddings or sub-word tokenization techniques like Byte Pair Encoding (BPE) or WordPiece, which break down unknown words into smaller, known units, thereby mitigating the OOV problem. The prevalence of OOV words is particularly high in domains with rapidly evolving language, such as social media or scientific literature.
