Osztálékra, commonly translated as dividend, is a distribution of a portion of a company's earnings to its shareholders. When a company makes a profit, it can choose to reinvest that profit back into the business for growth and development, or it can distribute a portion of it to its owners, the shareholders, in the form of dividends. The decision to pay dividends, and the amount paid, is typically made by the company's board of directors.

Dividends can be paid out in various forms, most commonly in cash. This means shareholders receive a direct payment of money for each share they own. The declaration of a dividend usually involves several key dates. The declaration date is when the board announces the dividend. The ex-dividend date determines who is eligible to receive the dividend; if you buy a stock on or after the ex-dividend date, you will not receive that particular dividend payment. The record date is the date by which you must be a registered shareholder to receive the dividend. Finally, the payment date is when the dividend is actually distributed to eligible shareholders.

The payment of dividends can be a sign of a company's financial health and stability, as it indicates profitability. However, not all profitable companies pay dividends. Growth-oriented companies, in particular, may choose to retain earnings to fund expansion rather than distribute them to shareholders. For investors, dividends can provide a regular income stream in addition to potential capital appreciation from rising stock prices.
