Osteophyták, commonly known as bone spurs, are smooth, hard bony growths that can form along the edges of bones. They are typically a sign of the body's response to stress, inflammation, or aging processes that affect joints. Osteophytes can develop in various parts of the body, but they are most frequently found in the spine, hips, knees, and feet.

The formation of osteophyták is often associated with osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in a joint wears down over time. As a compensatory mechanism, the bone may begin to grow new bone tissue along its margins, leading to the formation of osteophytes. These spurs can also arise from other conditions that cause inflammation or damage to bones and joints, such as rheumatoid arthritis or repetitive strain injuries.

In many cases, osteophyták do not cause any symptoms and are discovered incidentally during imaging tests like X-rays, which are performed for other reasons. However, when osteophytes grow large enough to press on surrounding nerves or restrict the range of motion in a joint, they can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. The location of the osteophyte dictates the specific symptoms experienced. Treatment for symptomatic osteophyták typically focuses on managing the underlying condition and alleviating pain through medication, physical therapy, or, in severe cases, surgery to remove the bone spurs.
