Osteogeniciteit refers to the capacity of a substance or material to induce bone formation. This is a crucial property for bone graft materials and implants used in orthopedic and reconstructive surgery. A material exhibiting osteogenic properties contains viable osteoprogenitor cells or factors that stimulate the differentiation of host cells into osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone synthesis.

In clinical practice, osteogenic materials are often sourced from the patient's own body, such as autografts from the iliac crest, which are rich in osteoprogenitor cells and growth factors. However, allografts from donors or xenografts from different species can also be treated to enhance their osteogenic potential. Synthetic materials, like certain ceramics and polymers, can be engineered to release specific signaling molecules that promote bone regeneration.

The process of osteogenesis involves a complex interplay of cellular and molecular events.
