It refers to a crucial component of a computer's internal architecture, specifically the part of the system bus that is responsible for transmitting memory addresses and I/O port addresses. The address bus is a unidirectional pathway, meaning data flows only from the processor to other components like memory or input/output devices.

The width of the address bus determines the maximum amount of memory that a processor can directly access. For example, a processor with a 32-bit address bus can address 2^32 unique memory locations, which is approximately 4 gigabytes. A wider address bus allows for a larger address space, enabling computers to utilize more RAM.

When the processor needs to read data from or write data to a specific location, it places the address of that location onto the address bus. Other components on the bus, such as the RAM controller or I/O controllers, monitor the address bus. When an address matches a location they are responsible for, they then engage with the data bus to perform the requested operation.
