osbornite

Osbornite is a rare mineral with the chemical formula TiN, consisting of titanium and nitrogen. It is categorized as a nitride mineral and is best known for its extraterrestrial occurrences.

Occurrence and formation: Osbornite forms at high temperatures in reducing environments and is most often found as small grains or inclusions in iron meteorites. It commonly occurs alongside sulfide- and metal-rich phases such as troilite (FeS), kamacite, taenite, and schreibersite (Fe, Ni)3P.

Crystal structure and properties: Osbornite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and typically displays a metallic luster with a gray to black color. It is opaque and brittle, with grains that can be subhedral to anhedral or granular in habit.

Occurrence and distribution: On Earth, osbornite is extremely rare. Confirmed specimens have been described from a limited number of meteorite finds and are mainly studied within meteorite collections. Its presence provides insights into high-temperature condensation processes in the early solar system.

Relation to industry: Although osbornite itself is rarely encountered on Earth, titanium nitride (TiN) is widely used in industry as a hard, wear-resistant coating. This commercial material is related in composition but is synthetically produced and distinct from the natural mineral.
