Osadniki, or settling tanks, are containers used to remove suspended solids from liquids by gravity. They are a standard unit in water and wastewater treatment, as well as in various industrial processes where clarification of effluents is required. In Polish engineering, osadniki may refer to settling basins in municipal treatment plants (osadniki wstępne and osadniki wtórne) or to sedimentation tanks used in water purification.

Most osadniki are circular or rectangular and provide a calm zone where particles settle to the bottom. An overflow system carries clarified water away from the tank, while a sludge collection mechanism (such as scrapers or rakes) directs settled solids to a bottom hopper for removal. In many designs, lamella plates or inclined baffles are used to increase the effective settling area and reduce the footprint of the tank.

Operation depends on hydraulic retention time and the surface loading rate. Typical detention times range from a few hours, depending on whether the tank serves as a primary clarifier in a wastewater plant or as a secondary clarifier. Proper flow distribution, effective scum removal, and reliable sludge handling are important to maintain performance and avoid short-circuiting or sludge buildup.

Applications include municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial effluent treatment, and pretreatment in drinking water plants. In water purification, osadniki are used after coagulation and flocculation to remove settled solids before filtration.
