országút

Országút is the term used in Hungary for the national road network that forms the main arterial routes outside motorways and expressways. These roads connect major towns, border crossings, and regional centers, carrying a large share of domestic traffic and freight. They are part of the public road system and are maintained and funded by the state.

Classification and design: Országutak can be single or dual carriageways and are designated with national route numbers. In many places they overlap with the European E-road network, bearing both a national number and an E designation on signs. They operate alongside motorways (autópályák) and expressways (gyorsforgalmi utak) as the backbone of Hungary's road transport system.

Administration and maintenance: The upkeep and development of országtutak are carried out by Magyar Közút Zrt., under the oversight of the ministry responsible for transportation. Upgrades, safety improvements, and routine maintenance are funded from state budgets and, where applicable, European Union funds.

History and development: The concept originated in the early 20th century as the national road network expanded to connect cities and regions. After World War II and during the late 20th century, modernization continued, with major upgrades in recent decades to integrate with the EU road network and to raise standards for pavement, signage, and traffic management.
