Orogeny convergence, or orogenyconvergence, is a geological concept describing how mountain-building processes (orogeny) are driven and modulated by the convergence of tectonic plates. It encompasses the deformation, metamorphism, magmatism, and crustal rearrangement that occur where plates collide, subduct, or accrete material at convergent margins.

Mechanisms include continental collision that shortens and thickens the crust, producing uplift and long-wavelength deformation; subduction of oceanic crust that generates magmatic arcs and crustal addition; slab rollback and mantle flow that influence crustal dynamics; and crustal extrusion and distributed shear that redistribute strain within the orogen.

Geologic signatures of orogeny convergence include thrust faulting and nappe structures, high- to medium-grade metamorphism, fold belts, extensive magmatism, and crustal thickening evidenced by thick sedimentary sequences and crustal xenoliths. The process operates over tens to hundreds of millions of years and is often accompanied by regional uplift and climate change due to elevation increase and rainfall patterns.

Well-known examples are the Himalaya, formed by the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates; the Andes, driven by subduction of the Nazca plate beneath South America; and the Alps, resulting from the collision of Africa-derived microplates with Europe. These belts illustrate how convergence at plate boundaries translates into major orogenic systems.

While orogeny convergence is a unifying framework within plate tectonics, regional and temporal variability means that additional processes, such as mantle dynamics, crustal delamination, and post-tectonic erosion, also influence mountain belts. The concept serves to integrate structural geology, metamorphic petrology, and geochronology in the study of mountain belts.
