Orkesterforståelse is a term used in music education to describe the knowledge, listening skills, and practical abilities needed to participate effectively in an orchestra. It includes understanding the roles of the different instrument families (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion), how a conductor communicates a musical idea, and how repertoire is structured for large ensembles.

Competences include score reading and analysis, cueing and response to conducting gestures, ensemble listening for pitch, tempo, rhythm, articulation, and dynamic balance, as well as tuning and blend. It also covers rehearsal processes, section leadership, and the ability to adapt phrasing and articulation to different styles and periods (baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary).

Pedagogically, orkesterforståelse is taught through score study, sectional rehearsals, ear training, and full rehearsals. The goal is to enable musicians to contribute reliably to the ensemble, understand interpretive decisions, communicate effectively with colleagues, and participate in ensemble planning and performance planning.

Historically, the concept has developed with the growth of modern orchestras and professional music education, emphasizing active listening, collaborative decision-making, and practical rehearsal strategies.
