ordinasjonen

Ordinasjonen (ordination) is the ritual act by which a person is set apart for ministry within a religious community. The term derives from Latin ordinatio, meaning ordering or arranging, and in Norwegian uses the form ordinasjonen.

The rite typically accompanies a sense of divine calling, and includes preparation through study or discernment, examination by church authority, and, in many traditions, the laying on of hands and prayers of consecration. Through the act, the individual is believed to be empowered to carry out duties such as preaching, administering sacraments, teaching, and governing the community.

Rites and theological significance vary by tradition. In Catholic, Orthodox, and some Anglican churches, ordination is regarded as a sacrament or sacramental act that confers sacred orders, with three major degrees: diaconate (deacon), priesthood, and episcopate (bishop). In these systems, ordination often requires male ordination for all three orders and is associated with apostolic succession. In many Protestant churches, ordination is viewed as a public recognition and commissioning into ministry rather than a sacrament; the structure can differ, with some allowing female ordination and varying requirements for education.

Historically, ordination emerged in early Christianity as a way to preserve apostolic authority and church governance. Laying on of hands and liturgical prayers have been central elements across traditions, though the exact rites and theological meanings have evolved differently in various denominations.
