orbitallike

Orbitallike is an informal term used in mathematics to describe a subset of a space that behaves similarly to an orbit under a group action, without necessarily being a single orbit itself. It is most often discussed in the context of Lie group actions, dynamical systems, and algebraic geometry, where one studies invariants and local models.

In a typical setting, let G be a group acting on a space X. A subset O ⊆ X is called orbit-like with respect to this action if it is invariant under G (g·O ⊆ O for all g in G) and, locally, resembles the action of G on a homogeneous space G/H for some stabilizer H ≤ G. Concretely, this means that O is a union of orbits and all points in O have stabilizers that are of a fixed type (often same conjugacy class), so O decomposes into orbits of the same dimension. When the action is a smooth action of a Lie group on a smooth manifold, orbit-like subsets often form smooth strata known as orbit-type strata.

Examples commonly cited include the set of vectors in a representation space with a fixed stabilizer type under a compact Lie group action, or local pieces of a dynamical system whose orbits share a common qualitative behavior. In such contexts, orbit-like subsets provide a practical shorthand for regions that are locally homogeneous without demanding that every point lies on a single global orbit.
