Orangutangers are great apes native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. The name orangutan comes from the Malay words "orang" meaning person and "hutan" meaning forest, translating to "person of the forest". There are three distinct species: the Bornean orangutan, the Sumatran orangutan, and the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan, all of which are primarily arboreal, spending most of their time in trees.

Orangutangers are the largest arboreal mammals, with males being significantly larger than females. They possess long, reddish-brown hair and their arms are longer than their legs, enabling them to swing through trees with a method called brachiation. Their diet consists mainly of fruit, supplemented by leaves, bark, insects, and sometimes bird eggs. They are known for their solitary nature, with adult males typically living alone and females raising their offspring independently.

Female orangutangers have a very long interbirth interval, giving birth to a single infant approximately every eight years. The young orangutan remains with its mother for an extended period, learning essential survival skills. Sadly, orangutangers face severe threats, primarily from habitat loss due to deforestation for palm oil plantations, logging, and agricultural expansion. This has led to all three species being classified as critically endangered, with the Tapanuli orangutan being the most rare. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining habitat and populations.
