Optoelektrikë, often spelled optoelectronics in English, is a field of electronics that studies and utilizes phenomena involving the interaction of light and electricity. It encompasses devices that convert electrical energy into light, devices that convert light into electrical energy, and devices that modulate or control light using electrical signals. This interdisciplinary field draws from physics, electrical engineering, and materials science.

The fundamental principle behind optoelectronics is the behavior of electrons within materials when exposed to light or when subjected to an electric current. For instance, semiconductor materials are crucial in optoelectronic devices. When photons of sufficient energy strike a semiconductor, they can excite electrons, generating an electrical current. Conversely, when an electric current flows through certain semiconductor materials, electrons can recombine with "holes," releasing energy in the form of photons, thus producing light.
