Oplossingbehandeling, also known as solution heat treatment, is a heat treatment process used to improve the mechanical properties of certain alloys, particularly those of aluminum, magnesium, and some steels. The primary goal of solution treatment is to dissolve alloying elements into a solid solution within the parent metal matrix. This is achieved by heating the material to a specific elevated temperature, below its melting point, and holding it there for a sufficient duration. During this holding period, the alloying elements diffuse and disperse evenly throughout the microstructure.

Following the solution treatment, the material is rapidly cooled, typically by quenching in water or oil. This rapid cooling traps the dissolved alloying elements in a supersaturated solid solution. The material in this state is generally relatively soft and ductile, making it amenable to subsequent forming operations. The true hardening effect of solution treatment is often realized in a subsequent aging or precipitation hardening process, where controlled heating at lower temperatures causes the dissolved elements to precipitate out as fine, uniformly dispersed particles. These precipitates impede dislocation movement, thereby significantly increasing the alloy's strength and hardness. The specific temperatures and times for solution treatment and quenching are critical and depend on the alloy composition and desired final properties.
