Oplosprocessen, often translated as dissolution processes, refers to the phenomenon where a substance, known as the solute, disperses uniformly into another substance, the solvent, to form a homogeneous mixture called a solution. This process is driven by intermolecular forces between the solute and solvent molecules.

For a solute to dissolve in a solvent, the attractive forces between solute particles must be overcome by the attractive forces between solute and solvent particles, and similarly for the solvent. A general principle is that "like dissolves like," meaning polar solutes tend to dissolve in polar solvents (like water), and nonpolar solutes tend to dissolve in nonpolar solvents (like hexane).

The rate at which a solute dissolves depends on several factors, including temperature, surface area of the solute, and agitation. Increasing temperature generally increases the solubility and dissolution rate of solids in liquids. A larger surface area, achieved by crushing a solid solute into smaller particles, exposes more of the solute to the solvent, thus speeding up dissolution. Agitation, such as stirring, helps to bring fresh solvent into contact with the solute surface and removes dissolved solute from the interface, also accelerating the process.

The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature is called its solubility. Solutions can be unsaturated, saturated, or supersaturated, depending on the concentration of the solute relative to its solubility limit.
