OnlineStreaming is a method of delivering multimedia content over the Internet for immediate playback or later viewing without requiring the user to download the entire file. It relies on continuous data transfer and buffering to accommodate fluctuations in network bandwidth, enabling playback at varying qualities.

The two main forms are on-demand streaming, where users select titles from a library, and live streaming, which distributes real-time content as it is produced. Both use client software or devices to request, receive, and decode media.

Core technologies include HTTP-based adaptive bitrate streaming, which segments media and adapts quality to current conditions. Common protocols are HLS and MPEG-DASH. Encoded media may use codecs such as AVC, HEVC, AV1, and may be protected by digital rights management systems.

Delivery typically involves encoding content, packaging it into segments, and distributing it through content delivery networks to reduce latency and improve availability. Clients buffer segments, decode them, and play according to network performance.

Applications span consumer services, education, corporate communications, and broadcasting. Content delivery platforms range from general streaming services to enterprise video platforms and educational portals, accessible via web browsers, mobile apps, or smart TVs.

Challenges include bandwidth costs, latency in live streams, copyright and licensing regimes, accessibility requirements such as captions, and technical issues like buffering and device compatibility. The field has evolved since the late 2000s with standardized protocols and robust delivery infrastructures.
