Onitrosation is a chemical reaction that introduces a nitroso group (N=O) into an organic molecule. This typically occurs when a primary or secondary amine reacts with a nitrosating agent. Nitrosating agents are compounds that can donate a nitrosonium ion (NO+). Common nitrosating agents include nitrous acid (HNO2), which is usually generated in situ from sodium nitrite and a mineral acid, or organic nitrites.

The mechanism of onitrosation involves the electrophilic attack of the nitrosonium ion on the nucleophilic nitrogen atom of the amine. If a primary amine reacts, the initial product is an unstable N-nitrosamine, which can then undergo rearrangement or further reactions. Secondary amines, however, readily form stable N-nitrosamines. Tertiary amines can also react under certain conditions, often leading to dealkylation and subsequent onitrosation of the released secondary amine.
