onderbelichting is a Dutch term that translates to "underexposure" in English. It refers to a photographic error where the sensor or film is exposed to less light than is necessary to create a properly exposed image. Underexposure can occur due to various reasons. The photographer might have set the aperture too small (high f-number), used a shutter speed that was too fast, or selected a low ISO sensitivity in low-light conditions. Incorrect metering by the camera's light meter can also lead to underexposure, especially if the scene contains large areas of bright light, causing the meter to underexpose the rest of the image.

The visual characteristics of an underexposed photograph include a lack of detail in the darker areas of the image. Highlights might appear reasonably exposed, but the mid-tones and shadows are significantly darkened. In digital photography, it is sometimes possible to recover some detail from the shadows during post-processing, but if the underexposure is severe, the information may be lost, leading to a noisy or muddy appearance. In film photography, significant underexposure is generally irreversible.
