The term derives from omnibus, Latin for "for all," and entered Romanian through French and English usage in the modern publishing vocabulary. It is distinct from an anthology (antologie), which collects works by several authors around a theme, whereas an omnibus generally centers on the works of one author, though some omnibus volumes group related works by more than one author.

Usage and reception: Omnibus editions are commonly issued to reissue a body of work, to publish a complete or selected corpus, or to present a thematic set of writings.
