omandil

Omandil is a name that may appear in discussions of J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium, often as a variant spelling of Amandil. In canonical texts, the figure is known as Amandil, a Númenórean nobleman of the Faithful and lord of Andúnië. The name Omandil is not standard in published works and is not independently attested in Tolkien’s writings.

In Tolkien’s history, Amandil is the father of Elendil and a leading figure among the Faithful during the later years of Númenor. He is remembered for his loyalty to the Valar and for urging Númenóreans to seek aid from Aman rather than bow to Sauron’s influence. He is associated with warnings against Númenor’s pride and with efforts to preserve Númenórean fidelity in the face of catastrophe.

During the Downfall of Númenor, Amandil is believed to have sailed west with a remnant of faithful Númenóreans in hopes of reaching the Undying Lands. His fate is not recorded with certainty, and he is presumed lost at sea. His line, however, continues in Middle-earth through his son Elendil, who survived Númenor’s Fall and founded the kingdoms of Arnor in the north and Gondor in the south. Elendil’s lineage proceeds to Isildur and onward, shaping the human kingdoms in Tolkien’s later ages.
