Olkalihaksen refers to the deltoid muscle, a large triangular muscle located at the outermost aspect of the shoulder. It is responsible for the rounded contour of the shoulder. The deltoid muscle is composed of three distinct parts: the anterior (front) fibers, the lateral (middle) fibers, and the posterior (rear) fibers. Each section originates from different parts of the scapula and clavicle and inserts onto the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.

The primary functions of the olkalihaksen include abduction of the arm, meaning lifting the arm away from the side of the body. This movement is predominantly performed by the lateral fibers. The anterior fibers are involved in flexion and medial rotation of the arm, such as bringing the arm forward and across the body. The posterior fibers contribute to extension and lateral rotation of the arm, moving the arm backward and rotating it outward.

The olkalihaksen is a crucial muscle for a wide range of upper body movements and is heavily utilized in activities such as throwing, lifting, and swimming. Its strength and coordination are essential for overall shoulder function and stability. Injuries to the deltoid muscle can result from overuse, direct trauma, or sudden forceful movements, leading to pain and impaired mobility.
