Oljebeständighet refers to the ability of a material to resist degradation or damage when exposed to oils and greases. This property is crucial for materials used in environments where contact with petroleum-based products is common, such as in automotive components, industrial machinery, and seals.

Materials that exhibit good oil resistance typically undergo less swelling, softening, cracking, or loss of mechanical properties when immersed in or exposed to oils. The degree of oil resistance can vary significantly between different materials. For instance, certain types of rubber, such as nitrile rubber (NBR) and fluoroelastomers (FKM), are known for their excellent oil resistance and are widely used in applications requiring such properties. Plastics like certain polyolefins and some polyurethanes can also offer good oil resistance.

The mechanism behind oil resistance involves the chemical structure of the material. Polymers with non-polar or less polar chemical bonds tend to be more resistant to non-polar oils, as they have less affinity for swelling or dissolving in them. Conversely, materials with polar bonds may absorb non-polar oils, leading to swelling and loss of integrity.

When selecting a material for an application involving oil exposure, factors such as the type of oil, temperature, pressure, and duration of exposure must be considered. Testing standards, such as those defined by ASTM or ISO, are often used to evaluate and compare the oil resistance of different materials. This ensures that components will perform reliably and safely under their intended operating conditions.
