The Olympic Movement is a global sports organization administered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The modern Olympic Games were founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894, inspired by the ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece. The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896. Since then, the Games have been held every four years, with the exception of wartime cancellations. The Olympic Movement includes both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, as well as the Paralympic Games.

The IOC is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement. It is responsible for selecting host cities, establishing the Olympic program, and ensuring the regular celebration of the Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees are responsible for representing the IOC in their respective countries, organizing their national teams for the Games, and promoting the Olympic Movement at the national level. International Federations govern individual sports and are responsible for developing and standardizing their respective sports worldwide. Athletes are at the heart of the movement, and their participation is essential to the Olympic Games. The Olympic Charter serves as the codification of the fundamental principles, rules, and bylaws of the Olympic Movement.
