Oktatás (education) is the process by which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, and habits through instruction, training, research, and experience. It encompasses formal education provided by schools and universities, as well as non-formal programs and informal learning that occurs in homes and communities. The overarching aim is to develop the capacities of individuals to participate effectively in society, the economy, and culture. In Hungarian usage, oktatás denotes the national system and practices of organized learning within Hungary, though the general concepts apply globally.

Education is commonly divided into formal, non-formal, and informal categories. Formal education refers to structured programs leading to recognized qualifications, typically delivered in schools and higher education institutions. Non-formal education includes organized learning outside the formal system, such as literacy courses, vocational training, and community programs. Informal education comprises learning that occurs spontaneously through daily activities, work, and social interactions without formal curricula or certification.

Educational systems are shaped by policy, governance, funding, and cultural context. Common policy goals include ensuring access and equity, improving learning quality, aligning curricula with labor market needs, and promoting inclusive education. Key components include curriculum design, teacher preparation and support, assessment and certification, and the integration of information and communications technology to support learning. Lifelong learning and upskilling are increasingly emphasized to respond to social and economic change.

Challenges often include disparities in access and outcomes, resource constraints, teacher retention, and the need to adapt to digital and interdisciplinary approaches. Effective oktatás requires collaboration among governments, educational institutions, families, and communities to create learning environments that are inclusive, flexible, and resilient.
