Oikosulkusuoja refers to a type of electrical protection device used in Finnish and other Nordic languages, commonly known in English as a residual current device (RCD) or residual current circuit breaker (RCCB). Its primary function is to enhance electrical safety by detecting imbalances in the current flowing through live and neutral conductors in a circuit. If an imbalance is detected—such as in the case of a fault current leaking to ground, which could occur during a short circuit or when a person comes into contact with live parts—oikosulkusuoja interrupts the circuit within milliseconds to prevent electric shock or fire.
