Oikeudenhaltija is a Finnish legal term for a person or legal entity that holds a protected right under Finnish law. The concept covers a range of rights, commonly including intellectual property rights such as copyright and neighboring rights, as well as other rights like trademarks, patents and designs. The oikeudenhaltija has the exclusive right to use the protected subject matter and to authorize others to use it, typically through licensing, assignment or other contractual arrangements.

Rights arise in different ways depending on the field. For copyright, the author is usually the oikeudenhaltija unless rights are transferred by agreement or by employment arrangements. For patents, the inventor or the entity that owns the invention holds the rights. For trademarks and designs, the owner or a licensee may hold the rights. Rights can be transferred, inherited, or licensed, and they may be managed directly by the holder or delegated to licensing organizations.

The oikeudenhaltija is responsible for protecting the right and for determining how it is exploited. This includes granting licenses, collecting royalties, and taking action against infringements. In many cases, licenses are negotiated directly with the holder or administered by collective management organizations on behalf of groups of holders.

When using protected works, it is generally necessary to obtain permission from the oikeudenhaltija or rely on a legally granted exception or a license. In cases of multiple holders, such as co-authors or joint owners, the term oikeudenhaltija can apply to several individuals or entities.
