oikaisumuodon
Oikaisumuodon is an extinct genus of jawless fish that lived during the late Silurian period, approximately 420 million years ago. The name derives from the Japanese terms "oikaisu," meaning "homecoming," and "odon," a common suffix used in paleontological nomenclature, reflecting the genus’s discovery in the Oïkaisuma region of central Japan. Fossils of Oikaisumuodon were first unearthed in 1973 by a team of Japanese and American scientists working on the Hukou Formation. The initial specimen, a flattened cranial plate, was catalogued as Oikaisumuodon yokomis. Subsequent finds revealed a small, streamlined body with a dorsal spine and a pair of barbels.
Oikaisumuodon is classified within the order Homalocephalan, a group of primitive cyclostomes characterized by their heterostracan
The genus provides valuable insight into the evolutionary transition from spiny-headed fish to more derived vertebrates.
