The name Oekivanog is derived from the local Oer language, meaning “meeting of waters.” The suffix -nog indicates a place, reflecting the city’s location where river and sea meet.

Geographically, the city sits on a broad delta with pockets of mangroves, rice fields, and tidal flats. The climate is temperate, with distinct wet and dry seasons that influence agriculture and festival cycles.
