Oathkeeping is the act of keeping one's sworn promises or oaths, and the related ethical obligation to fulfill commitments made under an oath. It is central to many civic, professional, and religious practices, where an oath signifies binding trust and accountability beyond ordinary promises.

Oaths are used in various domains. In medicine, physicians have historically taken the Hippocratic Oath to uphold patient welfare, though many modern versions emphasize medical ethics, patient autonomy, and confidentiality. In public life and governance, individuals may take oaths of office or allegiance, pledging loyalty to a constitution, state, or people. In the legal and financial professions, bar admission or licensing often requires oaths or affirmations of fidelity to duties, while the military uses oaths of enlistment or service. Ceremonial oaths may accompany licensing or admission to professional bodies.

Maintaining an oath can be straightforward or challenging: conflicts of interest, moral objections, or changing circumstances can create situations where oathkeeping tests judgement.
