Common components of nødrutiner include alarm and notification procedures, evacuation or shelter-in-place guidelines, defined assembly points, headcounts or roll calls, basic first aid and medical response, securing critical utilities, safeguarding data and equipment, and coordinating with external emergency services. Roles such as safety officers, fire wardens, and incident commanders are designated, and training and drills are conducted to ensure readiness.

Development and maintenance are typically based on risk assessments and regularly updated to reflect changes in building use, staffing, or regulations. Documentation usually comprises a plan or manual, contact lists, emergency numbers, maps of escape routes, and specific procedures for notable hazards. After drills or real incidents, plans are reviewed to improve effectiveness.
