Næringsnivået, often translated as trophic level, refers to the position an organism occupies in a food chain. It describes how an organism obtains its energy and nutrients within an ecosystem. Organisms are grouped into general trophic levels based on their feeding habits.

The primary trophic level consists of producers, which are organisms that create their own food, typically through photosynthesis. Plants, algae, and some bacteria fall into this category. They form the base of most food webs.

The next level is occupied by primary consumers, also known as herbivores. These organisms feed directly on producers. Examples include insects that eat plants, or animals like deer that graze on grass.

Secondary consumers are organisms that feed on primary consumers. These are often carnivores or omnivores. A bird that eats insects is a secondary consumer, as is a fox that eats rabbits.

Tertiary consumers occupy the third level and feed on secondary consumers. These are typically top predators in their ecosystems. Eagles that eat snakes, which in turn eat rodents, are an example of a tertiary consumer in that specific food chain. Quaternary consumers and higher trophic levels can also exist in complex food webs.

It's important to note that many organisms can occupy multiple trophic levels depending on their diet. An omnivore, for instance, might be a primary consumer when eating plants and a secondary or tertiary consumer when eating other animals. The concept of trophic levels helps scientists understand the flow of energy and the structure of ecological communities.
