närima

Närima is a term used in some Swedish-language scholarly discussions to describe the experiential sense of closeness or immediacy toward a person, place, object, or event. It emphasizes how near something feels, not merely how far away it is in physical space. The concept spans physical proximity, social closeness (the sense of belonging or accessibility of others), and temporal immediacy (how recently or soon something will occur).

In practice, närima is used in psychology to study perceived closeness in relationships, in urban studies to analyze how the built environment creates or sustains a feeling of being in reach of amenities, and in design to improve user experience by fostering a high sense of närima. Because it is not a strictly defined technical term, usage varies between disciplines. Researchers may measure närima with self-report scales, mapping exercises, or qualitative interviews to capture subjective experience.

Relation to other concepts: it relates to proximity, perceived distance, and social proximity, and can be contrasted with objective distance, which is a measurable metric rather than felt closeness.
