Näkyinänäkö, also known as visual snow syndrome, is a neurological condition characterized by persistent, non-disabling visual disturbances. Individuals experiencing visual snow often describe seeing a constant static or "snow" overlay in their entire visual field, similar to the interference pattern on an old television screen. This visual snow is typically present in all lighting conditions, though it may be more noticeable in dim light or when looking at plain surfaces.

In addition to visual snow, other visual symptoms can occur. These may include persistent afterimages, halos around lights, difficulty seeing in low light (nyctalopia), photophobia (sensitivity to light), and a trailing or palinopsia of moving objects. The severity of these symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, and some individuals may experience them more intensely than others.

The exact cause of visual snow syndrome is not fully understood, but research suggests it may be related to abnormalities in the brain's visual processing pathways. It is often associated with other neurological conditions, such as migraine with aura, and can sometimes be triggered by trauma or certain medications. Diagnosis is typically made based on a thorough medical history and a comprehensive eye examination to rule out other potential causes of visual disturbances. There is currently no specific cure for visual snow syndrome, but management strategies often focus on reducing the impact of symptoms on daily life, which may include lifestyle adjustments and, in some cases, medication.
