Nägemistestide, also known as visual acuity tests, are standardized procedures used to measure an individual’s ability to distinguish details at various distances. These tests are commonly employed in optometry and ophthalmology to assess eyesight and diagnose vision-related conditions. The most widely recognized form of this test is the Snellen chart, which consists of rows of letters or symbols of decreasing size.

During a nägemistestide, the patient is typically positioned at a fixed distance—usually 6 meters (20 feet)—from the chart. The test begins with the largest letters, and the individual reads aloud until they can no longer identify the symbols accurately. The results are recorded as a fraction, where the numerator represents the testing distance (usually 6 meters) and the denominator indicates the distance at which a person with normal vision could read the same line. For example, a result of 6/6 indicates normal vision, while 6/12 suggests the patient sees at 6 meters what a normally sighted person sees at 12 meters.

In addition to the Snellen chart, other visual acuity tests include the Landolt C, where patients identify the orientation of broken-ring symbols, and the Tumbling E test, which uses an outline of a letter to assess vision in individuals who cannot read. These tests are particularly useful for children or non-literate patients.

Nägemistestide are essential for detecting refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, as well as early signs of eye diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration. Regular vision testing helps maintain optimal eye health and ensures timely intervention if abnormalities are detected. The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and forms a critical component of comprehensive eye examinations.
