Nyunga is a small rural settlement located within Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region, near the southeastern shore of Lake Malawi. The village sits at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level and experiences a humid subtropical climate, with a pronounced wet season from November to April and a drier period from May to October.

According to the 2018 national census, Nyunga had an estimated population of around 3,200 residents, predominantly of the Chewa ethnic group. The local language is Chichewa, although English is taught in primary schools. Agriculture forms the backbone of the economy, with maize, beans, and cassava being the principal crops cultivated on smallholder plots. The proximity to the lake also supports freshwater fishing, which supplies both local consumption and nearby markets. Additionally, the community engages in handmade pottery and basket weaving, crafts that have been passed down through generations and offer supplemental income.

Historically, Nyunga was established in the early 19th century as a trading post between inland communities and European missionaries arriving from the German and British colonial administrations. During the colonial period, the area served as a minor administrative center, and a small mission school was founded in the late 1800s. Post-independence, the village has maintained a largely agrarian lifestyle, although development initiatives have improved access to clean water and electricity.

Nyunga is occasionally visited by eco-tourists and researchers interested in the region’s biodiversity, particularly the surrounding wetland ecosystems that support a variety of bird species. The village hosts an annual harvest festival in late December, featuring traditional music, dance, and a communal feast that showcases local culinary specialties.
