Nyíróerő, commonly written nyíróerő in Hungarian, denotes the force that a cutting tool must exert on the workpiece to shear material during metal cutting. It is a principal component of the cutting force and is typically considered in relation to the main cutting force acting in the direction of tool travel; other related components include thrust (along the tool axis) and, in some analyses, radial forces that affect tool wear and workpiece deflection. Measurement of nyíróerő is usually performed with dynamometers or force sensors mounted on machine tools, such as lathes or milling centers.
